Betting Types
When you first begin placing bets online with bookmakers it can be difficult to decipher what all of the relevant terms mean to know exactly what you are betting on.
Here at BetOn we've tried to simplify things for you, specifically for football (soccer) markets to give you confidence in your selections.
12X
The 12X (home/away/draw) market is the most regularly used betting market and refers to the following:
- 1 refers to the home team in the selection, to the left on a bookmaker page
- 2 refers to the away team in the selection, to the right on a bookmaker page
- X refers to the draw selection, in the centre on a bookmaker page
HALF-TIME/FULL-TIME (HT/FT)
For half-time/full-time betting, it means that the bettor predicts what the 12X (home/away/draw) will be at half-time, then also predicts what the 12X will be at full-time. There are nine selections available in the HT/FT market:
HOME TEAM/HOME TEAM |
HOME TEAM/DRAW | HOME TEAM/AWAY TEAM |
DRAW/HOME TEAM | DRAW/DRAW |
DRAW/AWAY TEAM |
AWAY TEAM/HOME TEAM |
AWAY TEAM/DRAW | AWAY TEAM/AWAY TEAM |
FIRST GOALSCORER/ANYTIME GOALSCORER
You can generally get superior odds by betting on a player on a specific team to score the first (or last) goal in the match. These odds vary depending on the position of the player; for example a forward is more likely to score than a defender, therefore this will be reflected in the odds.
If you think a player will score in the match but aren't sure when, you can use the anytime goalscorer selection, which offers reduced odds but means your bet isn't reliant on when the goal is scored.
OVER/UNDER GOALS/CARDS/CORNERS
The overs/unders market has gained in popularity and is most commonly placed on either goals, cards, or corners.
The over and under numbers vary depending on the match and the type and the item, so make sure to double check before you place any bet than you are comfortable with the amount. For goals, the most common bets are either Over/Under 2.5 goals, but most other options are available. The same applies for cards and for corners.
HANDICAP BETTING
If a strong team is playing a weaker team, you might feel that the strong team might win by more than just a single goal. In that case, you might want to have a look at the handicap markets. You can bet a team to win -1, which means that the score at the start of the match goes to -1-0 against your team, and in this scenario they are required to score two goals or more in order for the bet to bet successful.
It also works the other way. If you believe a team won't lose if they are given a goal of a start, you can bet a team +1, meaning the score at the start of the match is +1-0 in favour of your side. This means that if the match finishes in a draw, your selection will have been succesful.
CORRECT SCORE
A straightforward betting market; predict what the final score in the match will be.
DRAW NO BET
Placing a draw no bet selection works like this:
- If you place a bet on the home or away team to win the match, but aren't entirely sure whether the game could end in a draw, then the draw no bet market allows you to hedge your bets. In this situation, if the match ends in a draw then your bet is void and your stake is returned to you.
DOUBLE CHANCE
Double chance means covering more than one selection at reduced odds. For example if you think that either the home team will win or the match will be a draw, you can select the 1X double chance - though the odds on that particular outcome will usually be much less.
FULL-TIME RESULT AND BTTS
Betting on the full-time result and BTTS market means that you are essentially placing a double, or two bets. The first part of the bet means that you select one team to win the contest, and on the second part of the bet you are selecting that both teams will score in the match. Essentially your team must triumph by the score of 2-1 or higher.
SCORECAST
A scorecast is when you select which player will score first in the match and what the correct score will be. Like FT and BTTS, this is essentially two bets; the first part of the bet requires you to select the player who scores the first goal in the match, and the second part of the bet requires you to select the correct score. Odds for scorecasts tend to be reasonably high because both parts of the bet are difficult to predict.
WINCAST
A wincast is when you select which player will score first in the match and which team will win the match. Like scorecasts, this is essentially two bets; the first part of the bet requires you to select the player who scores the first goal in the match, and the second part of the bet requires you to select the correct score. Odds for scorecasts tend to be reasonably high because both parts of the bet are difficult to predict.
BET BUILDERS
Bet Builders are the latest development that has been introduced by bookmakers. This allows you to build up a bet using a number of different statistics or betting options. Each bookmaker has their own way of creating these so it's important you check how each works and make sure that your odds and stake are representative of what you are willing to risk.
